Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program

Canada’s social, political and economic hub- Ontario is the most popular destination among immigrants. It is also the most densely populated with 40% of Canada’s population living in Ontario. To support the economic development of the province, Ontario nominates suitable candidates through the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP).

OINP invites immigrants to migrate to Canada through the following categories:

  • Human Capital Category
  • Employer Job Offer Category
  • Business Category

  • Human Capital Category

The Human Capital Category prioritizes candidates who can support the labour market needs of Ontario through their skill and experience. There are five sub-categories under this program:

Ontario Express Entry Stream

This is an enhanced stream that is aligned with the Express Entry Program. You must have an active Express Entry profile to become eligible under this stream. The Ontario Express Entry Stream is further sub-divided into three categories:

  1. Ontario Express Entry: Human Capital Priorities Stream: Ontario invites Express Entry candidates to apply for a provincial nomination through this stream. Earlier, Ontario invited candidates who had a CRS score of 400 or above. However, the new Tech Draws have begun inviting candidates with CRS as low as 350.

  1. Ontario Express Entry: French-speaking Skilled Worker Stream: This stream targets French-speaking Express Entry candidates who also have strong English language skills.
  1. Ontario Express Entry: Skilled Trades System: This stream targets tradespersons who are already working in Ontario or who have recent work experience in Ontario.

You do not need to have a job offer to apply under any of the Ontario Express Entry Streams.

TECHNICAL DRAWS

What is the OINP Tech Draws?

OINP invites tech candidates in eligible tech occupations to apply for a provincial nomination under the Ontario Express Entry: Human Capital Priorities Stream. Candidates who have work experience in any one of the below occupations are eligible under this stream:

  1. NOC 2173: Software Engineers and Designers
  2. NOC 2174: Computer programmer and interactive media designers
  3. NOC 2147: Computer engineers
  4. NOC 2175: Web designers and developers
  5. NOC 2172: Database analytics and data administrators
  6. NOC 0213: Computer and information systems managers

Employer Job-offer category

If you have a job offer from Ontario, you may apply for a provincial nomination under this category. There are two streams under this category:

  1. International Students’ Stream: If you have completed your higher education from Ontario and have secured a job offer, you may apply for a provincial nomination through this stream.
  1. In-Demand Stream: If you work experience in an in-demand occupation like construction or agriculture and also have a job offer from the province, you may apply under this stream.

Business Category

If you are an entrepreneur and want to set up your business in Ontario, you may apply under this stream. Selected candidates are initially granted a Work Permit Support Letter to establish their business in Ontario. If they meet the terms in the performance agreement, the province nominates them for a Canada PR Visa.

The requirements of the OINP Entrepreneur Stream are:

  • Must have work experience as a business owner or senior managerial experience
  • Should have a high net worth (at least CAD 800,000)
  • Should have access to required investment funds (minimum CAD 500,000)

Should be able to create at least two or more jobs

Support for Businesses

The OINP supports employers by providing talent solutions through the immigration and TFW (temporary foreign workers) pathways.

It helps businesses navigate the immigration system to:

  • Fill skill shortages
  • Retain foreign students
  • Get skilled proffessionals faster

The Govt. has dedicated staff to support employers one-on-one. New businesses also get ample support in the province to participate in employer events and conferences.

The OINP is a dedicated referral partner under the Global Skills Strategy (GSS) of Canada. The GSS is a federal program that helps eligible Canadian businesses get access to skilled workers globally. It also offers faster application processing times and enhanced customer service from both ESDC and IRCC.

The requirements of the GSS are as follows:

  • Category A: You own an innovative company in Canada and need unique and specialized skilled foreign workers to grow and expand.
  • Category B: You own a business in Canada and your company needs to hire foreign workers working in occupations found on the global talent occupations list.
