If you are considering immigrating to Alberta, you currently have eight options available to you. This page is designed to assist you in determining which immigration stream best fits your circumstances.
Streams for workers
Foreign nationals employed in Alberta, as well as international graduates who have completed their education at an accredited Alberta post-secondary institution, are qualified to apply for a provincial nomination through the Alberta Opportunity Stream.
Application Fee: CAD $1,500
Individuals interested in the Alberta Opportunity Stream are required to submit their application online via the AAIP online portal. Subsequently, applicants will need to provide specific documents based on their unique circumstances and remit the online application fee.
The Express Entry stream enables Alberta to nominate individuals who possess a profile in the federal Express Entry system. Those who have shown connections to Alberta and possess the requisite skills to aid in the province’s economic development may receive an invitation from the province to submit an application.
Candidates in the Express Entry system who obtain a provincial nomination from Alberta are granted an additional 600 CRS points. This effectively ensures that they will receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence in the subsequent Express Entry draw.
Application Fee: CAD $1,500
The Alberta Express Entry Stream operates solely by invitation. Candidates with Express Entry profiles may receive a Notification of Interest (NOI) directly from the Alberta government within the federal system. Those invited have a limited timeframe to express their interest in being considered for selection under this stream.
If chosen, candidates will receive a request from the AAIP to apply for provincial nomination by submitting all necessary documents through the AAIP online portal.
The Rural Renewal Stream is designed for individuals who possess a job offer from an employer in Alberta to work within rural communities in Alberta.
Application Fee: CAD $1,500
This stream is driven by community involvement, meaning candidates must first secure the backing of a participating community in Alberta. Designated communities aim to attract and retain foreign nationals, employers extend job offers, and the community ensures that the candidate fulfills the stream's criteria. A letter of support is subsequently issued to the foreign national. Upon receiving this endorsement, the foreign national can then submit their application to the AAIP.
The Self-Employed Farmer Stream is intended for candidates who wish to immigrate to Alberta to either purchase or establish a farming business.
Application Fee: CAD $3,500
Candidates interested in this stream must initially present their business plan to the Alberta government and await a decision. The AAIP makes its decision based on consultations with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry to confirm that the business plan is viable and aligns with the requirements of Alberta's agricultural sector. If a favourable decision is granted, candidates must then compile the necessary documents and complete the required forms for both the Alberta government and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
